Texas GAT Geomaterial Enricher
Methodology
This dataset is an enriched version of the Texas geologic map designed to support engineering geology, environmental review, hydrogeologic screening, geomaterial characterization, and regional geospatial analysis.
Original geologic-map attributes are retained and supplemented with derived fields produced by the Texas GAT Geomaterial Enricher. The enrichment workflow interprets mapped unit names and descriptions using rule-based geological classification and evidence extraction.
Derived information includes
- Geologic context and unit setting
- Geomaterial code, class, name, and detail
- Primary, secondary, and additional materials
- Material roles, dominance, mixture type, and heterogeneity
- Clast size, lithology, abundance, and evidence
- Grain-size class, range, dominant fraction, and rock texture
- Consolidation and induration
- Carbonate, evaporite, organic, siliceous, argillaceous, ferruginous, sulfidic, and other compositional characteristics
- Depositional environment and depositional process
- Hydrogeologic screening, including permeability, porosity, infiltration, runoff, aquifer potential, and aquitard potential
- Engineering-material susceptibility screening for erosion, shrink-swell, slope instability, collapse, karst/dissolution, piping/internal erosion, liquefaction susceptibility, subsidence, and weathering/degradation
- Geochemical screening for contaminant mobility, contaminant retention, leaching, acid generation, salinity, sulfate, and carbonate buffering potential
- Classification confidence, evidence, provenance, review priority, and recommended QA action
The classification system preserves distinctions between direct lithologic evidence, contextual interpretation, named-unit fallback information, subordinate or accessory materials, clast materials, and unresolved information. Complex or heterogeneous geology is not automatically treated as uncertain when the broader geomaterial family remains well supported.
The GEOMAT_CODE field provides a compact family-level geomaterial classification, while supporting fields retain the more detailed geological evidence used to derive that classification.
